Arvada, Colorado
StudioCPG collaborated with the City of Arvada to transform three blocks of the Olde Town district into a vibrant and inviting Pedestrian Mall. Capitalizing on the unique circumstances of 2020, Arvada created a space that allows restaurants and cafes to expand their service, while encouraging a more intimate experience of the city center. StudioCPG helped the City balance a cohesive environment, while preserving the unique identities of the restaurants and shops.
Accessible and Inclusive
The team recognized that for the Pedestrian Mall to be a safe and successful environment, not only did the pedestrian areas need to be accessible and inclusive, but the street ends needed to be hardened, while remaining accessible to emergency vehicles. The first phase of the project was to create raised medians, including bollards and delineators to prevent accidental vehicular egress. A removable bollard was selected to allow emergency vehicle access. The medians are installed over the existing pavement to allow for the restoration of the open streets, if the City chooses.
Within the pedestrian mall, furnishings were selected that were suitable for restaurants, from sit-down dining to cafes and breweries. In some areas a raised pedestrian deck was installed to provide seating in front of several storefronts. In other locations, individual “parklets” were installed to provide a more intimate seating space. The City selected a single line of furnishings to provide a cohesive palette, then allowed individual restaurants to select branded partitions and umbrellas that expressed their own character.
