Tennyson Street Improvements

Denver, Colorado

In 2007, Denver voters approved funding expenditures to be undertaken with the proceeds from the general obligation bonds. Approximately $2.4 million was allocated to install streetscape improvements and enhance pedestrian access.

StudioCPG  provided planning and landscape architectural design services for street reconstruction and streetscape improvements along Tennyson Street between 38th Avenue and 44th Avenue in northwest Denver. This marks the first street-wide improvements project in this blossoming arts district since the trolley tracks were removed in the late 1940’s. Project goals included enhanced pedestrian safety and accessibility along with the development of a consistent visual identity for this commercial corridor in the heart of the Berkeley neighborhood.

Conceptual Planning

The conceptual planning process included an extensive public outreach component. A Task Force was assembled to represent diverse entities engaged in corridor activities. (17) meetings and public workshops were conducted in 60 days to gather input and feedback regarding the vision for overall improvements.

Final Design

The final design anticipates redevelopment based on revised “Main-Street” zoning along the length of the corridor by:

•Taking advantage of the relatively wide ROW at side-streets by wrapping streetscape improvements around corners and extending improvements to the alleys.

•Integrating pedestrian traffic into what had been an auto-centric corridor by constructing sidewalk Bulb-Outs opposite off-set side street intersections allowing a greater range of fully accessible pedestrian movements between the widely spaced existing traffic lights.

•Working closely with roadway design engineering to develop a finely nuanced approach to street cross-section design and site grading that works to resolve extreme variations in existing sidewalk cross-slopes.

•Providing a simple sidewalk design that contributes to the commercial district’s identity and can easily be patched or modified without losing visual effectiveness as redevelopment occurs.
