StudioCPG designed a new playground as part of the redevelopment of the Northern Shores exhibit/concession area at the Denver Zoo.
Playground Upgrades
Denver Parks, Denver, Colorado
StudioCPG was contracted through their on-call landscape architecture services for the City and County of Denver to provide upgrades to play equipment and site drainage at two existing park playgrounds at Sloans Lake Park, Green Valley East Ranch Park and Mayfair Park.
Recognizing limited funds and accelerated schedule for design and construction, StudioCPG worked to minimize removals and reconstruction and focused on developing a conceptual approach to redevelopment that:
- Identifies site specific access and use patterns
- Organizes playground program and locates play equipment in a way that allows different age groups access without having to cross paths
- Combines traditional platform-based play structures with new, activity-based structures which always includes swings
- Works to accommodate supervising adults in both terms of comfort and relative proximity to the youngest children
The model served as the basis for the preparation of design alternatives at each park
Mayfair Park
Denver, Colorado
Wood structures at Mayfair Park playground had become hazardous, prompting Denver Parks to engage StudioCPG to design upgrades. Public meetings revealed strong community support for retaining the Smoky Hill Trail playground theme, which was accommodated with equipment selections that include a horse and wagon with a fort-themed color palette of greens and browns.
Existing play pit dimensions were retained wherever possible to minimize disturbance to surrounding shade trees, which make all the difference in our sunny Colorado climate. Additional shade trees at the perimeter and two shelters were included to instantly provide refuge adjacent to the playground.
A perimeter loop trail was designed both to support universal access at the playground and create an exciting tot vehicle track. A separated swing pit minimizes conflict between the swingers and other park users.
Madam C.J. Walker Park
Denver, Colorado
StudioCPG prepared a new playground design for the small neighborhood park in an established and active neighborhood in northeast Denver. Our design process included community outreach with neighbors, neighborhood representatives and local politicians. Final design included interpretive designs on concrete walls, traditional and experiential playground equipment, paths, and site furniture.
