Barnum Trash Rack

Denver, Colorado

New regional water quality facilities located within Denver’s Barnum Park function to filter contaminants from stormwater prior to reaching Weir Gulch and, eventually, the South Platte River.  Although the facility functions well, outfall design included a large concrete headwall and railings that became the inadvertent focal point of two important view sheds within the park, disrupting the Park’s naturalistic aesthetic.

The Outcome

StudioCPG prepared design documents for an architectural screen, creating specific design criteria for collaboration with local artists at 23rd Avenue Sculpture Studio. The outcome is a whimsical steel screen that mitigates the visual impact of the outfall design without modifying the wall structure or affecting the facility’s function.
StudioCPG facilitated a Public Meeting during the Preliminary Design Phase so that nearby residents could review and comment on proposed park improvements.
